UmbrellaToday started with a simple frustration: weather apps give you too much information. You do not need a 10 day forecast, UV index, and pollen count just to decide whether to grab an umbrella.
The Core Idea
Instead of showing you raw weather data, UmbrellaToday answers one question:
Should I bring an umbrella when I leave at [your time]?
Everything is built around that single decision.
How It Works
The system runs in three steps:
1. You Set Your Schedule
Tell UmbrellaToday when you typically leave home. Morning commute, afternoon errands, evening gym session. Each "step" in your schedule has a location and a time window.
2. We Check the Forecast
Before each departure time, UmbrellaToday pulls hyperlocal precipitation data for your exact location. We look at a configurable window around your departure time based on two settings:
- Lead time: how far ahead to check (e.g. 30 minutes before you leave)
- Outside time: how long you will be outdoors (e.g. 45 minutes)
3. You Get an Alert
If rain is expected during your window, you receive an email with the details: when the rain starts and stops, how intense it will be, and whether you should bring an umbrella or just wait it out.
What Makes It Different
Most weather apps are passive. They show data and expect you to interpret it. UmbrellaToday is active:
- Schedule aware: it only alerts you when it matters
- Location specific: not a citywide average, but your exact address
- Threshold based: you control your rain sensitivity, from light drizzle to heavy downpour
You can configure how sensitive your alerts are. Some people want to know about light drizzle, others only care about heavy rain.
Stop Checking, Start Knowing
Most of us waste mental energy every morning wondering about the weather, or worse, skip checking entirely and get caught in the rain. UmbrellaToday eliminates that guesswork. Set your schedule once, adjust your rain sensitivity, and let it handle the rest. Try it free and never get caught without an umbrella again.
